...I remember a time before EA had any real competition to there NHL games when every year we would get a bit of this a bit of that, rosters, but nothing ever near what Madden would get. Me and my friends could always see how much more stuff Madden would get, and we'd have to wait until next season to get what last years madden got EVERY year. I got so sick of that garbage.
Not to mention the Super Goalies, the CPU where i would be on a winning streak nothing could touch me i mastered the AI, and then shot after shot taken by the CPU would go right through my goalie (literally right through my goalie, even through the jersey) and my gameplay just declined every year, i was actually losing interest in NHL games. Down to the point in NHL 2000 where i had played 150 games maybe, NHL 2001 for PS2 was the same, not only that i was choked by the lack of any franchise mode or anything like that. Was really not liking where the series was going, very arcade style. When EA was always touted as being a "simulation" as NHL 96 for Sega Genesis would have you believe. Now all of a sudden everyone is for arcade not sim hockey just because EA said so.
By the time NHL 2002 came out i was bored. Yes career mode and all that was cool, i thought it was awesome at the time. The new NHL game but i never bought it. Then when February came around and NHL 2K2 came out for Dreamcast, i didn't really expect anything. I just wanted a hockey game other then NHL 2K (which blew ***) for my Dreamcast and was totally shocked with what came out. I totally sim game that awoken my eyes to what EA was doing.
Now look what happens, NHL 2003 comes out and EA starts fiddling with it some more over 2002. Whats this EA responding to a dreamcast only release? Then 2004 was totally redone. 2005 as well. And even 2006. Why? For once NHL had some competition. Thank goodness.
If 2007 is the year EA returns to sim, or should i say makes the better hockey game (i do not include rehashed Madden franchise mode options in this sorry people, gameplay only) i would be somewhat surprised, somewhat unsurprised. They finally are responding and at least TRYIng to make a new hockey game each year. But cut off the competition and people get greedy.
Point = EA was getting greedy, handme downs of madden to NHL. 2K is to thank either way for the best hockey game(s) around coming this year.
