Heart N Soul - a Columbia Legacy

Season 1
I've read thru some of your legacys and they are just amazing! I don't have the attention span to do something that huge , but this is going to be just a quick journal of my legacy experiences, with updates once in a while.

Columbia Supporter Team News

NEW YORK - After struggling through another tough losing season (when the Lions went 2-25, 0-14 Ivy), Columbia Athletic director Artie Fiorino decided to move the team in a new direction - The hiring of new coach Donny "flashl  ght" Jackson. Jackson who learned basketball at Rucker Park from basketball legend Earl Manigault, should bring a flashy style of play based in a strong foundation of fundamentals and old-school tricks.

-------------------------------------

 Meet the team
Starters
PG - 6' Senior, Little fast guy , average shooter, fundamentally sound defensively

SG - 6' Sophomore, good shooter, average speed, trouble getting his own shot but can knock em' down

SF - Jason Palmer 6'8" Freshman, good shooter, average from 3, slow (65speed), poor endurance, never dunks, decent fundamentals in post game/rebounding, decent handle (this guy is modeled after me when i used to play)

PF - 6'9" Sophomore mediocre player, has a little shooting touch

C - 6'7" Junior, good dunker/finisher when he manages to get open

Bench - Coach Jackson's bench is in the doghouse right now. There is a 6'9"PF/C freshman with good fundamentals.

Lions Win with Buzzer Beater - and Defensive Strategy

NEW YORK - Columbia fans loved Jason Palmer's gaming winning jumper from the top of the key with seconds left to beat Fordham. It was the Lions defense however that allowed them to come from behind and win.
Fordham's PG had been hitting jumpers over the smaller Lions PG for most of the game. Columbia coach Donny Jackson showed once again why they call him "flashlight" when he put in his Big lineup and defended Fordham's PG with freshman forward Jason Palmer. Using the 1-3-1 the Lions freshman seemed to frustrate Fordham's PG into taking bad shots.
Jackson seemed to downplay the coaching brilliance by saying "it aint no thing but a chicken wing on a string from burger king"

Now thats classic... 8)

Wow dude...are you really 6'8"...I'll be lucky if im only a foot shorter than u when i''m fully grown.

Did u play college ball...If so where?

never played college ball. I played some highschool and a lot of playground basketball. After highschool i tried to get in great shape but I had some health problems that prevented me from playing at a higher level. I wasn't a superstar or anthing in highschool and my idiot varsity coach didn't play me very much the only year i played varsity.=altho i think he had something against me because i dominated the paint in practice and most of the centers we faced were like 6'4stiffs with no skills, i also liked to handle the ball , shoot jumpers ,and move around offense and he wanted me to play like shawn bradley... anyway I do have crazy stories from playing ball and i got to play against some current players. Steve Francis - grew up in the same neighborhood same age back when we were like 13 we used to play our teams during the summer or play 33. Jason Capel - i think hes in the Nbdl - he was going to dunk on my team on a fastbreak and i came up from behind and pinned it on the bottom of the backboard, but the ref called a foul. I was hype so i actually did the Mutombo finger shake at him... Demarr Johnson - hes on the knicks roster - we guarded each other for 8min in a highschool game, i played him real physical tight defense and shut him down for no points and he had like 1 rebound, and I had like 3 points and 4or5 rebounds. He got frustrated or something and tried to elbow me so i slammed an elbow in his ribs  then we were about to fight and the ref gave us both technicals

whoa...great stories man. It lets the rest of us realize it ain't so easy to be a baller just cuz you are tall. But i have to say that musta been a [***]
of a thrll playin with those guys..thanks man.

Heart N Soul - a Columbia Legacy Season 2

Season 2,Week 1 Pre-season

-------------------------------------
New York Journal

NEW YORK - The Lions might not just be the worst team in the Ivy League. It wouldn't be out of the question to say they are one of the worst teams in division 1 college basketball. Columbia, 7-20 last season under 1st year head coach Donny Jackson will be lucky to win 5 games this season. "Flashlight" as they call him, might not have been C.U's brightest idea. Rumors have been rampant that athletic director Artie Fiorino was attempting to lure several different promissing assistant coaches. Fiorno hoped to replace what many are calling a failed experiment in Jackson, but they seem to be stuck under Jackson's "guidance" for at least this season. Whats worse is the Lions lost their only true point to graduation. The 6' senior led their team in minutes and assists last season. This team is inexperienced, lacks talent and the coaching situation seems to be a joke. I'm picking them to finish last in the Ivy League .

SL4M Magazine

Q & A
Great expectations - thats what happens when a playground legend finally gets a shot at his dream job. O.k., maybe not his DREAM job (that would be coaching the Knicks) ,but at least coaching a division 1 school can be a beautiful thing. After a dissapointing 7-20 season, the pressure now falls on head coach Donny "Flashlight" Jackson, who spoke with SL4M Magazine's Frank Wright in a little Q&A about the life , basketball and the challenges ahead.

Frank Wright: Donny, first thing I have to ask you is the nickname. How did you get the nickname "Flashlight" ?

Donny Jackson: When i was only like 10 or 11, I used to go to the court and try to play with the older guys. Sometimes the only time I'd get to shoot was when it got dark and they started to leave. After a while I started bringing a flashlight. Then several years later I had been getting into trouble in the neighborhood and I was hanging around the basketball court and Goat ... Earl Manigault yelled at me "come here flashlight i need an assistant".

FW: The Goat! Earl Mannigault , He was a legend. What was he like ?

DJ: He was the man. Alot of people said he was the greatest player ever. Really nothing but respect for him. He was a living legend in the area. He kept the Rucker tournament going and was always trying to make a difference.
(G.O.A.T.)http://www.cbjuandeaustria.com/igen/manigault_2.jpg

FW: Good stuff, So , you get the job at Columbia. What kind of challenges does that present ?

DJ: We have had kind of a losing tradition , and I have to find a way to turn that around. Last season I basically inherited a set team. We're trying to run a more wide open style and many of the players are accustomed to running strict plays. This is the first year that I was able to bring in some of my recruits.

FW: Speaking of recruits , tell us about Ka'Ron Fulton. That guy is huge! What kind of an impact will he have on this team?

DJ: Hes very raw. The guys call him Full House. Hes almost 7'3" and he has really worked hard this summer to shed a few pounds. He's a hard worker, but he runs like he's 7'3" [Laughs]. We watched some of his highschool games in New Jersey and were very impressed by his awareness on the defensive end.

FW: It's been real , good luck to you in your season.

DJ: Thanks

Man you better teach that guy a lesson for disrespecting your team. Overall pretty good dynasty, I liked the SL4M article.

No doubt , plus my coach might lose his job
