CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina has named Roy Williams as the 18th head coach in Tar Heel men's basketball history, Director of Athletics [***]
Baddour announced at a press conference on Monday night at the Smith Center.

Williams was an assistant under former UNC head coach Dean Smith for 10 seasons from 1978-88. He returns to Carolina from the University of Kansas, where, in 15 seasons as head coach he led the Jayhawks to four NCAA Final Four berths, including a runner-up finish in 2003.

Williams sports a career record of 418-101 and his career winning percentage (.805) is the highest among all active Division I coaches with at least six years experience. He led the Jayhawks to 14 straight 20-win seasons.

Williams' teams won nine conference championships in his 15 years at Kansas. In seven years of Big 12 Conference play, his teams went 94-18 against conference foes, capturing the league title in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2003 and the postseason tournament crown in 1997, 1998 and 1999.

From 1995-98, Kansas was a combined 123-17 - an average of 30.8 wins per season. Williams led KU to 14 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including the Final Four in 1991, 1993, 2002 and 2003. Under Williams, KU played in the National Championship game twice, in 1991 and 2003.

In his 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Carolina, the Tar Heels went 275-61, won three Atlantic Coast Conference titles (1979, 1981 and 1982), advanced to two Final Fours (1981 and 1982) and won the 1982 NCAA championship.

Williams is a three-time national coach of the year, a former president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and a former chairman of the men's basketball rules committee. He received the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award last weekend in Los Angeles. He was named head coach at Kansas on July 8, 1988.

Williams, 52 (born August 1, 1950), and his wife, Wanda, have a son, Scott (a 1999 UNC graduate), and a daughter, Kimberly (a 2002 UNC graduate). Scott, a guard on the Tar Heel basketball team during the 1998 and 1999 seasons, works as a financial analyst in Charlotte. Kimberly resides in Lawrence, Kan.

With all the hype around this team for the upcoming season, which is starting this week, there are people saying this team could be Final Four material. When asked about this, Roy responded by saying, "In the past two years this team has lost a combined 36 games. Ole Roy ain't that good."

Also, when asked about the players of the team, he responded with many good things about the players.
"I think this team will be successful because of the great players that are here. Raymond looks like he is doing a great job leading this team, and I look for him to continue to lead the team, while cutting down on his mistakes.
"Rashad has obvious offensive talent, which was seen last season against my Kansas team, but he really needs to step up on D. If he can step up his D he could be All-American
"Sean is looking good but I don't know much about him. He played well in his limited games last season, but I will be expecting him to score 10-12 points a game while grabbing 10+ rebounds.
"I look for Jawad, Jackie and Melvin to continue their great play from last season and be the real leaders of the team, since they are the oldest players, all Juniors.
"I hope to get minutes from the bench in David and Jackie but I am going to need Reyshawn to step up and play well also. It looks like we will be having a great season. Just can't wait to get started this week against ODU."
Suprisingly, the North Carolina Tar Heels are being ranked higher then temas like Duke and Texas in the preseason. It should be interesting to see if this young Tar Heel team can live up to expectations and stay in the top 10 all season and have a good tourny appearance. Very high expectations for a team that went 19-16 last season and only made the NIT.
Roy's Pregame Comments-"Well its the season opener, and my first game here. I am looking forward to walking onto the court for my first game. In the game tonight, however, I want this team to play good D, rebound, and pass well. I want to jump out on this team early and never look back. I dont want a let down tonight and I really want to see how this team plays in a real game situation."

UNC Starting Lineup:
PG-Raymond Felton
SG-Melvin Scott
SF-Rashad McCants
PF-Jawad Williams
C-Sean May

Early in the game, the Heels did exactly what Roy wanted them to do and jumped out ahead of ODU. It was mostly great work on the defensive end, especially by Felton who had 3 steals in the opening 5 minutes to set the tone. However, the ODU Monarchs were able to grab offensive boards and try to keep things alive.

Towards the end of the first half, McCants began shooting lights out and made a jumper on 3 straight possessions ending the first half with 14 points. Felton continued to play a good game and ended the first half with 5 points, 3 rebounds, 9 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks, talk about filling the stat sheet. UNC ended the half on a 14-2 run making the score 53-33.

The second half was all UNC and they continually increased the lead throughout the half. With a 35 point lead, UNC took out all 7 players who had played before, and put in the reserves for the final 6 minutes. The game ended with a score of 100-55 in favor the the Heels.

Notable UNC Players:
Felton (POG)-9 points, 13 assists, 4 rebounds, 5 steals, and 2 blocks.
May-10 points, 7 boards, 3 blocks
McCants-29 points, 5/7 on threes.

Notable ODU Player:
#40-12 points, 12 rebounds (6 offensive)

Roy's Post Game Comments: "In general this team played great tonight. I was real impressed by the leadership of Felton, and his outstanding play. As a team, I was happy with our 27 assits, 7-13 shooting and our 20 fast break points. Also, I was impressed by Reyshawn Terry playing wtih the reserves for 6 minutes, scoring 8 points.

"Also in this game, there are a few things that I am dissapointed with. We were sloppy in the opening minutes, and ended the game with 14 turnovers. The major thing that I am angry with is rebounding. We were outrebounded 30-28 and 15-0 on the offensive boards. 15 offensive boards! Against the top teams if we allow that many offensive rebounds we are going to get killed, luckily it didn't hurt us tonight. The rebounding edge would have been even worse if the reserves didn't outrebound ODU 12-5. I am going to have to work with the team on rebounding.

"In general, however, we played a great game. I am looking forward to playing our next game, and I hope to get another victory. Thank you."
