I was having this problem.
I brought my PS2 to my local retailer.
They gave it a tune-up.
No problems since then...

get a can of compressed air and just blow it out. Its $5 that saves you hundreds in repair. This also works well on most electronics, dvd players, vcr's etc.

I had the same problem with nfl fever.I found the problem was a bad save if nothing else works for you try deleting any espn save on your hard drive.

Some possible solutions for Xbox owners:
Take out the disc and make certain it is perfectly clean. Any dust or fingerprints will cause the dreaded error message.
Next, turn the machine off and restart. This clears the memory cache to clear itself.
Someone on another board reported that turning the Xbox upside down works.
A can of compressed air sprayed strategically in the cooling vents often does wonders. Reportedly the fan draws a lot of dust into the vents and innards of the machine.

when did you get your xbox? if you got it sometime in the middle of 2002 some xboxs sold in the US were the same xbox models in japan, and, if you didn't know this, the japanese models constantly scratched the discs. look on the side of your disc, is it scratched or are there any grooves?
if yes then you should call microsoft and they'll give you another xbox with a memory transfer (must be under warranty)
my friend had that problem above
