why do you think your alternative rap(like Mr.Lif, Aesop Rock) is better than my gangsta rap(like Juelz Santana and Young Gotti, Jeezy, Trae)

if anything my rappers have more to do with the original rap legends like NWA and Public Enemy than do Aesop Rock(some white guy) and Mr.Lif.

KRS-One
November 22nd, 2006, 10:35 AM
You don't listen to gangsta rap.

Yukmouth, Tech N9ne, Capone N Noreaga, and pretty much everyone on Strange Muzik and Smoke-A-Lot Records are gangsta rap.

Juelz Santana, Young Gotti, Jeezy, and whoever Trae is are pop rappers, not gangsta.

Having said that, I dislike gangsta rap in general most of the time (although I do have my moods).

On top of that, NWA and Public Enemy aren't the original rap legends, they didn't even come into the picture until rap was about 15 years old, and Public Enemy were anything but gangsta rap. Public Enemy were the first major political rap act.

The original legends of rap are Busy Bee, Grandmaster Caz, Funky Four Plus One More, Spoonie Gee and the Treacherous Three, Coca La Rock, Kool DJ Herc, and Grandmaster Flash.

By the way, why do you act like white people aren't allowed to like, listen to, or practice the art of rapping? Saying Aesop Rock is white as if to prove that he's nothing special. Aesop Rock was, is, and probably will be for quite some time the only real 'abstract rapper', his lyrics only make sense if you listen closely and even then only if you have an open enough mind to get some of the concepts he's speaking on.

King Sylla

jeezy and santana are both gangsta rappers(both are crips and bloods respectively) justh happened they made it mainstreamely. Trae is a south rapper part of ******* By Nature(ABN). Pop rappers are like Nelly and Yung Joc

Public Enemy and NWA made rap what it is now. NWA broke onto the scene and made America more aware of this ****.

I don't care if white people listen and like rap and even act black, cuz I got some white homeboys, but a ***** is not going to liek someone who listens to abstract rap which is less realistically focused than Gangsta Rap, telling him that his guys are trash. I know you appreciate lyricism, nad Lil Wayne is one of the best lyricist out there right now(but it's pretty thin)

What I want is for y'all to show my gangsta genre respect, and not call everyone whoi s not like MR.Lif or Aesop Rock trash

Can i say something? Ok NWA might have made what west coast rap is today (Not positive) but not all rap (You can also say 2pac and Snoop made what West Coast Rap is today also). Nas & Wu Tang Clan made Hip-Hop what it is today (based on style). Ok you got the Legends (Busy Bee, Grandmaster Caz etc..) who 1st made hip-hop what it was for the 80's (Not positive though) then you got KRS-One and others that lead on to Hip-Hop in the 90's and then in the 90's guys like Nas, Wu-Tang Clan and many more made what hip-hop is today.

Im done :). Whether im correct or not i just wanted to speak my mind.

Oh yeah why is Lil Wayne the best lyricist? Post his "good" lyrics and let me see if there better than some rappers like Jay-Z,The Game (Somtimes the game is good not always) and Lupe or even Eminem and dont forget Talib Kweli and Papoose (Papoose aint bad if you heard of him).

Im not gonna post here again i just want to know why you think this way.

King Sylla
November 22nd, 2006, 11:38 AM
Jay Z bites Lyrics, Game is inconsistent, I don't know much about Lupe, but I won't debate the other threee. YEs I've heard of papoose, I got a CD of his at the fair in 2005.

Can I say something?

Everybody go into Microsoft Word, and type in "gangsta". You'll see that the word is mispelled. When you go into Spell Check, you'll see that they'll give you the option of "gangster" or "gangsters".

Just because you act a certain way outside of these message boards does not mean that you have to act uneducated here (unless you really are). Use capital letters and proper punctuation... please. And if half of your words need to be censored, then you probably need to take a time-out from the forums.

"

Just a, another day another dollar

Now look what you got

Another hater, another plotter

****, you know the drill

A brother pay, a brother holla

Watch 'em, they creeping

Another raid, another copper

Aw man

Another case, another lock-up

What

Another bail, know that cake better pop up

Yup

That's just day to day **** we go through

And results of the day to day ****s we go through

Some *****z day to day pitch, they local, and

Some *****z day to day bricks, they coastal, and

Some *****z day to day snitch, they vocal

I don't honor them fools

Them type of dudes get they tonsils removed

I speak from the heart of the hood

From the boarded up apartments with wood

From the cracked down crack houses (yeah)

To the burnt up black houses

To fiends inside with that burnt up glass out

And puffing weed makes my actions switch

I'm at the window, with the pistol, like Malcolm

Ain't that a ***** (man)

And I'm paranoid, paranoid

But still I got to get it, got to have it, make it happen boy

[Chorus]

Now I lay me down to sleep I pray the Lord my soul to keep

If I should die before I wake I pray the Lord my soul to take

And may this song play all the way

And if it skip a beat, hit repeat

This the realest **** I ever wrote, this is me

And if it skip a beat, hit repeat

This the realest **** I ever wrote, this is me

[Juelz Santana]

Look now

Another dead, another born

Vice versa

Another here, another gone

Pay attention

Another smile, another mourn

Another funeral, another baby shower going on

Get it, huh

That's just life in the hood

You earn scars, you earn stripes in the hood

Huh, get it

I live the life of a hustler

No sleep all night for a hustler, buster

And if your ***e weak, cut it with Bo Peep sheep

I swear fiends will chase that high for four weeks

I'm still dealing with the day to day beef and

Stress, hunger, patience

The day to day basics

Yep, **** that we go through, you know

****

Look at the **** that we go through, you know

*****z come home, can't get jobs

*****z getting money, acting like they can't get robbed

And that don't mix

Okay. I'm just saying it's not a word.

I understand that it's the Internet. But it is also a public forum. Go to an AIM chatroom and do the same thing, it will not matter. Go onto here, and it is accepted only because there aren't moderators here monitoring the forums the way their rules abide them to enforce. Register onto Operation Sports or FanHome, post this, and you'll get warnings and disrespect left and right.

Case in point is, the Internet is still communication among other people in the real world, and it is probably best that you respect others in a mannerly way. As anybody can access this, you don't know who you will run into. [this isn't being personal, just hypothetical, but] If you speak to your mother in a different tone than you do on here and if she monitored your actions on these forums, I'm sure you would watch what you say and do.

There are 'implied' rules that most people follow, given the atmosphere they are in.

I dont care what beef they went through that doesnt effect there way to make a song (Yeah they will make a song about the beef so what).

whoa if you listen to Weezy, the reason he became more acclaimed after began being a bit obscure, was that people started realizing that huh maybe there are some southern rappers that are pretty good lyricist, and Weezy is crazy with his rhymes though, and that's what his success has been built on, because he is not the most intimidading looking guy, but he spits raw fire.

If you think that stuff is lyricism, I'm going to have to end this debate right now, because that stuff can barely be considered words, much less elogant and properly arranged words with significance and value (which is the fancy of way of saying LYRICISM).

Nothing Lil Wayne has ever written can compare to the lyrics of guys like Canibus, Lif, El-P, or even Buckshot.

Even back when I was like you and listened to that garbage I couldn't stand Lil Wayne because his lyrics are just so weak it's pathetic. Go DJ, That's my DJ. Go DJ, That's my DJ. Go DJ, That's my DJ.

Now THIS, my young friend, is lyricism.

SONG: Trapped
ALBUM: The BDI Thug
It was a puff of black smoke, in the air
I choke, then I witness two beady eyes there
Glare, with no fear, pitch black
Waitin for the brother to attack, I tried to speak
I tried to talk, but my voice is gone
I feel like I'm on the other side, word is bond
But he ease up and tell me to stand still
I can't move at my own will, chill, I don't feel
That the situation cause for panickin, I'm stiff like a mannequin
But then again, when I felt the cold breeze
Ease across my back, lay back, in the wind, watch a brother cease in
Out the window, smooth like a puff of smoke, when I take a toke
I feel the body ain't no joke
So follow me, as I follow him
Into the night, and you can see the light

[Chorus 4X]
I feel like I'm trapped in the world of rap
I feel like I'm trapped

[Buckshot]
Wake up, you can kill the steady talk
We gon' steady walk, where?
First look in the eye of a needle and stare
Dreads in my hair, oh yeah, the BDI glare, yeah
Hear ye, hear ye, hear ye, you can come near me, don't fear me
But spare me, the bulls--t you talk to everybody else
Cuz it's irrelevant to those who got knowledge of self
Why equals self, so why ask why, I try
Not to ask why, while my shotty lie beside my bed
Thoughts in my head make my dreads grow, so you bled slow
But you wouldn't let go, the best is yet to come
Lay back as I kick some lyrics from my dia-phragm
God damn, somebody got lost, here I am, whose the boss?
Verbal floss if you know what's best for you
When they rescue, BD Buckshot at the average group
Ain't nothin personal, but at rehearsal
I'm serve justice for a click, and we roll thick

[Chorus 4X]
I feel like I'm trapped in the world of rap
I feel like I'm trapped

[Buckshot]
One man steps up to the mic, right, by a little man, right
Short height, smooth throat, that's made to float
And came to drop the bomb, everybody is listenin, so I remain calm
And drop it on the topic of the dress code
Timberland strapped type, and stomp a ni--a head mode
We reside on the bowls of peace in the belly of the beast
But how cant here be peace when the Devil never cease
To cause mischief, this s--t is makin me griff
Outta control, I'm fed up with it, I'm dead up with it
See I'm ready for head up with it
S--t it on who? Back in '82, it was you
Yup, you started it, now everybody wants a little part of it
What, the rap music, I know you can't refuse it
But I'm here to tell you that you must lose it
Strictly convo, rhythm and poetry, s--t, it got to go

I'm sorry, man, but you've got me dyin' over here..... :rotfl: As you can tell, I don't freestyle in my spare time.

Do you know what I do? I play baseball for San Diego State University, play guitar in my elevator and collect tips, go to parties and don't drink, pull off my Rodney Mullen freestyle-like tricks in front of a public crowd, sing at karaoke nights at our dinners in the Dining Hall, drift from top to bottom in our 8-story parking lot, and go to any sporting events or "movie sesh"'s and concerts available at school. The time in between involves classes and homework.

Wasn't always like this, you know. I had a best friend that was respected by everybody, and loved by everybody. Nicest and sweetest kid I had ever known... changed my ways of viewing things, and how to be respectful and courteous. He died when he was 15 of a heart condition. Unfair, and unjust. I have taken his role in life. Sorry if that offends you or makes you laugh. Uneducated people make me laugh.

Didn't have to rap about that to make good lyrics.

I'm sorry about your friend; however, part of being "courteous and respectful" doesn't include talking down to people in the condescending, "holier than thou" tone that you often do with people; especially when it comes to your opinions on hip-hop culture and improper english (or, "slang", as many term it).

You act like you write perfect english or something, which is not the case, as you've made mistakes even in this thread:

Go onto here, and it is accepted only because there aren't moderators here monitoring the forums the way their rules abide them to enforce.
1. To use "Go" and "Here" right next to each other is an oxymoron, and doesn't make sense. Maybe, "Come here...." would've been a better selection of words?

2. That whole sentence doesn't even make sense, because "abide" can only mean any of the following, "to accept", "to endure", "to wait", "to remain", "to tolerate", "to submit", or "to pay", as given by it's dictionary definition.

Plug any of those words into your original sentence and see if they fit:

".....it is accepted only because there aren't moderators here monitoring the forums the way their rules _____ them to enforce."

I guess "accept" or "tolerate" could fit, but it doesn't flow right with the sentence and sounds unnatural.

I think you meant to use the word "instruct" or something like in definition.

".....it is accepted only because there aren't moderators here monitoring the forums the way their rules [instruct] them to enforce."

So you see, you're not perfect yourself (and neither am I, nor anyone else for that matter).

Just thought I'd bring you off your high horse a little. Next time, don't be so quick to judge someone "just cuz they speak a lil' slang." Doesn't make them any more-or-less competent.....;)

You shouldn't have been worried about it. Even though it wasn't the most proper selection of words to use there, people don't trip when you make a minor mistakes. That's all I was getting at. Just ease up a little, because this is nothing more than a casual place of discussion. No need to be so formal all the time.

That being said, you're a very articulate individual, and there's nothing wrong with that. That's a very invaluable quality to have, especially in the work force. Kudos to you for making consistent practice of it.....

No, I'm not being a moderator. I'm being a teacher.

Although I agree they actin a fool typin like that, it's not like this forum has some sort of etiquette code or anything. It's just their own type of jargon... gangsta in this case instead of nerd type like "n00b" and stupid crap like that.. as long as you can read the word, I think you should just be happy with it.

I'm throwing in Nas, Gangstarr, Chuck D and IMO, the one of, if not the most underated MC ever, Inspectah Deck.

Anywho, as for Luda, he is like a "better" version of Lil' Jon or Usher. His main goal is to get the club jumping and to get paid, that's why 75% of his music has Jon, Pharrell, Usher, Bobby Valentino back in the day or some other mainstream artist on it. Southern Hospitality is about as deep as you'll get out of Ludacris. Just, the way he words his versus is sometimes catchy, but in all honesty they aren't that great or meaningful. His first album was his best and it wasn't even that good, and IMO it keeps getting worse. Moneymaker, IMO is Grade A garbage...

I'd say Chino XL is one of the most underrated of all-time, along with R.A. the Rugged Man.

Check this (stuff) out.

ALBUM: Poison Pen
SONG: Wordsmith
Perfection, flawless, masterpiece, no mistakes
Back in the 1800s I was burned at the stake (I am the Wordsmith)
Metaphor Mephistopheles, degrees I've achieved
The brain fluid it takes to believe would equal the seven seas (I am the Wordsmith)
I could reveal the true name of God, you'd go insane upon hearing it
Release enough winds to blow down pyramids (I am the Wordsmith)
I'm the Michelangelo of syllable, since I freestyle Genesis been biblical
That's something you gotta give in to

[Verse One]
Yo, yo, since born in my mama's ******l sauna
As a sono-gram, I've been fond of phonics
It's ironic, even as an embryonic
Fed through an umbilical, don't that sound biblical?
I've been a terror since I teareth out of the uterus
'Cause evil plans were made to defeat us as a fetus
Though now I walk in infamy, as a child they had it in for me
Was raised with guns in infantry, in diapers and in infancy
The childhood of a hood, that was raised in the hood
Cops said, "Put your hands in the high sky"
I put my hands down on the hot hood
I can't whine or drink wine, nine planets planned it
'Til it became apparent, my parents shouldn't have been a parent
State to state we ran some, I wasn't worth no ransom
Money, won't you hand some? A ni--a wasn't handsome
Raise the mind like Charles Manson's
Knew I was some man's son, but which one?
That made me strong, created my poison tongue

[chorus]
Perfection, flawless, masterpiece, no mistakes
Back in the 1800s I was burned at the stake (I am the Wordsmith)
Metaphor Mephistopheles, degrees I've achieved
The brain fluid it takes to believe would equal the seven seas (I am the Wordsmith)
I could reveal the true name of God, you'd go insane upon hearing it
Release enough winds to blow down pyramids (I am the Wordsmith)
I'm the Michelangelo of syllable, since I freestyle Genesis been biblical
That's something you gotta give in to

[Verse Two]
Why you cut school? 'Cause you ain't feel too good
I cut school 'cause my cuts ain't heal too good
Through all the physical abuse my mind escaped through the gift of wordplay
I memorized encyclopaedias and dictionaries
I wrote anthems from antonyms, harmonies from homonyms
Created cinema from synonyms
Was livid to eliminate that illustrious life you livin' in
Wrote rhetoricals in rhythms
I could paralyze with a parable, make rhymes out of religion
Crucify you with a prefix, or suffocate you with a suffix
Wrote lectures so infectious it's known to infect the listeners
Who dissin' us?
Yo punks you wait... I punctuate
My karma's the comma
That puts you inside of a coma
Hyphen, dot, dot, semi-colon, leave you semi-swollen
Question mark, you pregnant?
Oh you're not? I love you, period.
To sum it up, language is my essence
f--ked up in all my adolescence 'til my Moms was out of lessons
Laws: I store convenient
Still I rob a convenience store
Love Mom, f--k Mom, s--t I ain't love me no more
Mentally it didn't register, b--ch
Empty the register, b--ch
You just a cashier, b--ch
Give the cash here, or I'll shoot you in your cabbage
Hijack a getaway cab, b--ch
Words ain't makin' me no loot, don't change now Dow Jones average
Regardless, we Godless
They stole my innocence
In a sense, the judge sentenced me to three lifetimes sentences
To write my life and times and sentences
Art, my dark archnemesis
They want me off the premises, that's what the premise is
Locked on a tier where you can't shed a tear at
Studied more Shakespeare than any African shakes a spear at
And the whole world fear that, and it hurts
I got caught killing time, but then I got with words

[chorus]
Perfection, flawless, masterpiece, no mistakes
Back in the 1800s I was burned at the stake (I am the Wordsmith)
Metaphor Mephistopheles, degrees I've achieved
The brain fluid it takes to believe would equal the seven seas (I am the Wordsmith)
I could reveal the true name of God, you'd go insane upon hearing it
Release enough winds to blow down pyramids (I am the Wordsmith)
I'm the Michelangelo of syllable, since I freestyle Genesis been biblical
That's something you got to give in to

[Bridge]
People can say whatever they want about me
But agree that I am the Wordsmith (I am the Wordsmith)
They can try to ignore everything that I achieve
But agree that I am the Wordsmith (I am the Wordsmith)
Yo, the love of words is deep in my veins
Must be to silence my pain, I am the Wordsmith (I am the Wordsmith)
And even if I never move a million units
It's my blessin how I do it, I'm the Wordsmith (I am the Wordsmith)

[Verse Three]
I'm in a game full of morons, and they keep putting more on
I tutor the Torah, I'm in the core of the Qu'aran
The mind's what I represent, and emcees better re-present
I'm taking this rappin' bulls--t to the fullest extent
I have reservations why Indians are on reservations
Told the board of education I was bored of education
As far as this go I leave you deader than disco
Rocking sex and violence over sax and violins
Through your minds camera lens, you're in need of an ambulance
I'll knock you to the asphalt, it's your own *** fault
Your last thought, I'll never sell my self short to be famous
And taking it up the anus just ain't us
The world could get the ***** of this classical trained pianist
My P.O. was P.O.'d, handed a cup, told me to "pee in this"
The linguist musician, my college position is my intuition
Told me that I wouldn't be affordin' tuition
My education's all on my own
So I might have been born yesterday, but I rhyme like there's no tomorrow

[chorus]
Perfection, flawless, masterpiece, no mistakes
Back in the 1800s I was burned at the stake (I am the Wordsmith)
Metaphor Mephistopheles, degrees I've achieved
The brain fluid it takes to believe would equal the seven seas (I am the Wordsmith)

A lot of my time is spent listening and writing music. I know its not easy to come up with consistantely exceptional lyrics. I think Eminem is one of the top lyricalists, not only because of his skill, but also because of the amount of material he has written for himself and for others. Its not enough just to have the skill to write amazing lyrics, you have to be able to do it on a regular basis for a long time. If someone really wanted to, they could put all of their time and energy into one lyrically dominant song, and make it seem like they are a master. I know I could do it... but then, what material would I have for my next song? The reason I say Shady is because he has the ability to write good music on a regular basis, and the music will have meaning. If you listen to the song 'Stan', it is an amazing story and the lyrics are exceptional (for a story). Then you turn around and hear him tear up the track in a track like 'Soldier'. I don't know if anyone has said this, but Lil Wayne does not write any of his lyrics... they are all freestyled (just like BIG). So, thats why I consider him one of the best lyricalists around; his freestyled lyrics are better than what most mainstream artists can write.
