Program History

The 2006 Oregon Ducks experienced an incredibly disappointing end to a season last year. After beginning the year with four wins and no losses, and achieving a #11 ranking in the AP Poll, the Ducks traveled to Berkley to face the #16 ranked Bears. Unfortunately, this game ended in a blowout against the Ducks.

Oregon then went on to win only three of the final eight games, which included a heartbreaking 30-28 loss to the OSU Beavers in which a late Oregon field goal was blocked. The Ducks did play in a bowl game, representing the Pac-10 in the 2006 Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl. The game was not one of the Ducks' high points during the season, facing a BYU team that appeared better prepared as they lost, 38-8.

2007 Oregon Ducks Season Preview

Dennis Dixon will need to exceed expectations if he hopes to lead Oregon to a national championship.

By Rich Cirminiello -- MSN.com
When coordinator Gary Crowton left Oregon for LSU in January, Bellotti made a bold move, replacing him with New Hampshire's Chip Kelly.

The playbook says no huddle and four wides, but the play of the quarterbacks, plus the receivers' bouts with the dropsies, scream for a more conventional approach that features Jonathan Stewart, a beast of a back with All-America potential when he's healthy.

On defense, Oregon likes to attack from time to time, but when it fails to mount consistent pressure on the quarterback, such as last year, the secondary is prone to getting exposed.

The onus is on ends Nick Reed and Dexter Manley to build on last year's success so the safeties and linebackers don't have to blitz more than is necessary.

Corners Walter Thurmond and Jairus Byrd took a few lumps as freshmen, but showed more than enough potential to feel good about the future at the position.

Week 1 Preview (vs. Houston)
September 1st, 2007

(0-0) (0-0)
Houston Cougars..........Oregon Ducks

Chris Fowler: Hello everybody, we're here in Blacksburgh, Virginia to preview the inaugural games of the 2007 college football season.

Lee Corso:
Woo!, and I'm ready to go!

Chris: Before we get to the main attraction, let's look around the nation and predict some of the scores from the top 25.

Around the Nation

@

Quick Hits

  • Will Cal be able to extract full vengeance from last season's loss at Tennessee?
  • Will DeSean Jackson prove to be a fitting replacement for Marshawn Lynch?
  • Is Erik Ainge's injured finger worse than we expected?

@

Quick Hits

  • Can Dennis Dixon show that he is more than just a scrambling quarterback?
  • Will Houston's star running back change the course of the game with his talent?
  • Will the Cougars offensive players go deaf while listening to the Auzten Stadium crowd?

Chris: And now, onto the reason all these screaming fans are behind us: the return of Hokie football. Is Sean Glennon good enough to lead VT to a national championship?

Kirk Herbstreit: I think so. Glennon seems poised enough to not make mistakes and let his defense handle much of the load.

Lee: Not so fast, my friend. I just believe that there are too many other great teams for the Hokies to luck into the national championship game. They will win the ACC, however.

Chris: Let's also look at a spotlighted squad on this first Saturday of September, the unranked Oregon Ducks. Dennis Dixon and Jonathan Stewart highlight an explosive offense; how in the world do you stop these guys?

Kirk: You don't. All a defense can do is hope to contain these flyin' Quackers long enough to let their offense catch up. Dixon runs the option well and will probably run about as often as he will pass.

Lee:
I think Dixon will try to establish a presence in the pocket early against Houston, but will revert to running before long. Ducks in a blowout.

Heisman Watch

1) Colt Brennan- QB - Hawaii
2) Mike Hart - RB - Michigan
3) John David Booty - QB - USC
4) Tim Tebow - QB - Florida
5) Darren McFadden - RB - Arkansas

Predictions

........: Oregon, 50-14

........
: Oregon, 45-17
