Default New York Yankees Franchise [4-0; vs Blue Jays]

Yankees Get A Great Pitching Performance Out Of Chien-Ming Wang

Wang pitched a complete game shutout in the Yankees opening day victory.

In the first inning, Wang got into a slight jam, there were runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs, but Damon made a great diving catch to force David Eckstein to tag back up at 3rd, and then "The Big Hurt" grounded into a double play to end the inning. Until the 4th inning, there was no offense, but Johnny Damon lead off the inning with a solo shot, which gave the Yankees the 1-0 lead. Then again in the 6th, Bobby Abreu connected for a solo homerun, which gave the Yankees a 2 run lead. In the 7th, Robinson Cano hit his 3rd double of the game, and then his buddy, Melky Cabrera, hit a triple to bring Cano home, and leave the game at 3-0. Nothing exciting happened after that, Wnag just continued to pitch great, and give the Yankees the opening day win.

Yankees Bats Help Them Sweep The Jays

Jason Giambi hit a walkoff homerun in the 9th inning to give the Yankees an opening series sweep.

This game had a lot of potential to be a great one, you had two young up and coming pitchers on the mound in Phil Hughes and Dustin McGowan. In the 1st inning the Blue Jays got off to an early start, Vernon Wells hit a solo shot after Hughes hung a curveball. Again in the 2nd inning the Jays got another solo homerum, this time from Alex Rios, this was his 3rd homerun in 3 games. Rios conneted with another solo shot int he 4th inning, which gave him his 4th of the year, this put the Blue Jays up 3-0. The Yankees bat finally arose from the dead after Alex Rodriguez hit a 2-run homer to put the Yankees down only 1 run. The Jays came back with a run in the 5th, after a sacrifice from John McDonald to bring Greg Zaun home. After that, the Yankees let Hughes finish the inning, but they went to the bullpen in the 6th, and brought in Kei Igawa. In the bottom of the 5th, the Yankees got that run back, after Johnny Damon hit a double that scored Melky Cabrera all the way from 1st base, which made the score 4-3. On Igawa's first pitch of the season, Frank Thomas hit a solo homer to lead off the inning and make the score 5-3. In the 6th the Yankees lead off the inning with a homerun off the bat of Bobby Abreu, this put the Ynakees down 1 run, and made the score 5-4. Igawa gave up another lead off homerun int he 7th, this time off the bat of Aaron Hill, after this inning he was taken out, and Joba Chamberlain was brought in. In the 7th the Ynakees finally took the lead, after Derek Jeter came u clutch and hit a 3-run homerun, scoring Jason Giambi, and Morgan Ensberg who was brought in to pinch hit for Melky Cabrera. This gave the Yankees a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the 7th inning with 2 outs. In the 8th Joba Chamberlain was brought in to set up the save for Mariano Rivera, and he did his job, although, he let a runner reach 3rd base, and also let one reach 1st base. In the 8th the Blue Jays brought in reliever Scott Downs, after Dustin McGowan let up 7 runs, Downs didn't let up any that inning. Mo was brought into the game in the 9th inning, but he didn't do his job, he got the first out, but then gave up a double to Shannon Stewart, then Greg Zaun hit a single to score Stewart, and that tied the game at 7 in the 9th inning, but Rivera got out of it from there. Rivera is off to a bad start to begin his 2008 season, obviously. To lead off the 9th inning, Jason Giambi hit a walk off homerun to give the Ynakees the win, and the opening series sweep aganst the Blue Jays, this came off Scott Downs.
